Tantra and Union with the Divine

I'm on a spiritual path. We all are, actually, but many of us don't know it. My path is different from most in that I want to include my spirituality in all aspects of my life, including sex and relationships.

Combining sex and spirituality could be considered heresy to some thanks to our Puritanical forefathers. But really, what better way to achieve union (yoga) with the Divine than through merging with another? Why not engage in sacred sex? Which brings us to Tantra yoga.

When you say "Tantra yoga," many people respond with, "that's the yoga of sex." Yes and no. The point of Tantra is to experience the balance of masculine/feminine, Shiva/Shakti, yin/yang. Sex can be a vehicle for experiencing that balance, but it's not the only way.

A differences between what I call "Western" sex and Tantric sex is that Tantric sex is not goal oriented. Western sex is about achieving the goal of orgasm. Tantric sex is about the give and take of sharing pleasure with your partner, with or without orgasm, and moving the creative energy of kundalini shakti up through the chakras in order to experience Divine bliss or samadhi.

This is done through ritual, breathing exercises, certain positions and subtle, rather than overt, movements. It's really a completely different mindset, and the effects are very powerful. For one thing, it energizes both partners rather than making them fall asleep afterward. Tantra provides a profound experience of merging with another at a soul level. That merging spills into every aspect of your life, allowing you to see your connection to everything.

Call me old fashioned, but I think we as a society treat sex way too casually. We don't consider the consequences of our actions when we engage in casual sex. When we sleep with someone, an energetic connection is created that can have a long term effect on our psyche. If we understood the spiritual implications of sex, it would seem that we would think twice before we decide to randomly merge our life force with another.

If we want to experience heaven on Earth, it's necessary to combine our spirituality with our sexuality. Begin researching and practicing Tantra. You'll be glad you did, and your partner will thank you, too! (;^D
